Vail, with its 50th birthday on the horizon, is getting an extreme makeover.

The Lions Head area of Vail Village has been upgraded with the addition of a $1.5 million pedestrian bridge linking the gondola with lodging. The town also is adding heated streets and sidewalks. |
The mountain town, trying to keep pace with other ski resorts, both near and far, and in need of an update in the eyes of many residents, is in the midst of more than two dozen redevelopment projects valued at $1.3 billion.
The community about 100 miles west of Denver is a top destination and wants to stay that way. Vail is spending $13 million on heated streets and sidewalks, fountains, benches, and lighting and is experiencing a flurry of private investment as developers smell opportunity.
Progress has a price, according to skeptics, who worry about the erosion of the characteristics that have led Vail this far.
But this is a juggernaut.
A Four Seasons hotel and Ritz-Carlton residences are in the pipeline, as well as tunnels that will take noisy trucks off the narrow streets and make loading and delivery more efficient. A key piece of the plan, the Arrabelle at Vail Square on the site of the old Lionshead gondola, will feature a hotel, homes, a plaza, skier services and an "après-ski" restaurant.
